BHRT Therapy for Women in Bellaire, TX

Female Hormone Replacement Doctor Bellaire TX

Nobody has to tell you when you've started the physical, mental and emotional roller coaster ride that is menopause.

Just because your ovaries stop releasing eggs doesn't mean you have to put up with the mood swings, hot flashes, diminishing bone density, heart disease risk, low libido, and vaginal dryness that hormonal deficiencies can stimulate.

Just because you've been around for 45 - 55 years doesn't mean your testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and DHEA levels have to suddenly drop and drain you of energy and fun.

Instead of sitting around wondering how many hot flashes per day are normal, you should be asking yourself which one of these hormones need to be supplemented in order to stop those hot flashes in their tracks.

Your provider and Physician Assistant Lisa Wilkerson can give you that answer. They've been helping women manage menopause for decades with plant-based, non-invasive Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT).

These sexual health specialists can quickly determine which of your hormones are deficient, then deliver the safest, customized form of natural hormone replacement therapy available: BHRT. In addition to boosting energy and libido, this therapy can lower the risk of osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular conditions, and colon cancer.

Symptoms and root causes of hormone imbalance

You know you're suffering from a hormone imbalance if you're struggling with:

  • fatigue
  • irritability
  • brain fog
  • weight gain
  • night sweats
  • hair loss
  • dry skin
  • low bone density
  • low libido
  • insomnia
  • depression
  • hot flashes
  • vaginal dryness
  • breast tenderness

As functional medicine practitioners, your provider and Physician Assistant Lisa Wilkerson will work not only to relieve these symptoms - they will target the root cause/s behind each of your debilitating symptoms.

Accomplishing this will require testing to determine whether ingested or environmental toxins are causing your hormone disruption - most commonly, this "dirty dozen":

  • arsenic
  • atrazine
  • BPA
  • dioxin
  • lead
  • mercury
  • glycol ethers
  • fire retardants
  • organophosphate pesticides
  • perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs)
  • perchlorate
  • phthalates

Some of these chemicals can disrupt the delicate signals sent between estrogen and testosterone, or even trick your body by imitating a hormone. That's why it's crucial to purge them from your system before determining your actual baselines for each hormone.

How does BHRT rebalance your hormones?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy delivers hormones that are molecularly identical to the hormones that your body produces. That's because they are made from plants like yams, flax, and soybeans. This means that your BHRT can be customized to fit your specific needs - without the side effects and risks presented by synthetic hormone therapies.

Hormones are your body's chemical messengers. They're produced by your ovaries and your endocrine glands (the thymus, hypothalamus, adrenal, parathyroid, and pituitary glands) to help moderate the metabolism, growth and sexual responses in your every organ and tissue.

The following hormones can be balanced with BHRT:

  • Estrogen: levels drop during menopause, taking bone density, heart function and libido with them.
  • Progesterone: prepares the uterus for pregnancy and the breasts for breastfeeding. Low levels of progesterone can cause headaches, mood swings, weight gain, and tender breasts.
  • Testosterone: women need it too - to provide energy, bone density, muscle mass, cardiovascular maintenance and libido.
  • DHEA: Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and is the precursor to both male and female hormones; deficiency can cause fatigue, depression, immune system dysfunction, dry skin, and low libido.

How can you test your hormone levels?

During your first visit, our specialists will ask you about your:

  • medical history
  • lifestyle
  • daily stressors
  • diet
  • exercise routines
  • current medications

A genital exam may be performed to rule out any non-hormonal conditions that can cause your symptoms.

Finally, you will undergo one or more of the following diagnostic tests - these tests will determine your baseline hormone levels and whether or not you need BHRT. You will likely undergo these tests several times, as lifestyle, aging, and environmental factors can change your hormone levels:

Blood test

A sample of your blood will be sent to a lab for hormonal analysis. However, the sex hormones in your bloodstream are 95-99% bound to carrier proteins. This means that these bound hormones are unavailable to target tissues and thus, the test may be unable to completely detect them.

Blood serum test

This test is able to detect a whole host of hormones, including peptide hormones like FSH, LH, prolactin, and fasting insulin; thyroid hormones like T3, thyroid antibodies, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and (though uncommon) cortisol binding globulin (CBG).

Saliva test

To perform this test, you'll spit into a plastic cup several times throughout the day. This test measures the amount of hormone in your body that your tissues are able to absorb (known as bioavailable). This allows us to monitor and adjust your hormone levels throughout you BHRT. Research also suggests that it's also an accurate way to determine testosterone and DHEA levels.

Urine test

This test can reveal your free and total hormone levels, measures all three types of estrogen, determines how well you're metabolizing those hormones, and whether or not your body is detoxifying estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

BHRT Delivery Methods

The delivery method chosen for your natural hormone replacement therapy will depend on your specific needs, including your comfort level and required dose:

Delivering hormones directly into your bloodstream guarantees 100% absorption. It's easy to monitor, allows for future dose adjustment as needed, and can be done at home, resolving symptoms quickly.

Topical creams/gels

If applied each day, this method keeps your hormone levels stable and reduces your symptoms. These can be applied to your arms or shoulders, but not the breasts or abdomen.

This delivery form avoids the first-pass to the liver, and doses can be adjusted at any time. It may take a while to determine the appropriate dose, as every woman's skin absorbs topicals differently.

As with any medical treatment, results of BHRT Therapy will vary from patient to patient, depending on age, genetics, environmental conditions, and other health factors. Tobacco users and heavy alcohol drinkers may not experience the full range of BHRT benefits.
