Me Before Kids:

Ever since I can remember I have been a lover of food! All food, every type of food, I loved all of it! Especially sweets, that's my favorite! Then, when I moved to San Diego in 1999 that's when my passion for health and the outdoors went into overdrive. Living in San Diego in my 20's had a profound, lasting effect on my soul.

It gave me an inner drive to nourish my body with food and a curiosity to learn how food affects our bodies. I also started setting goals for myself. I had always wanted to run a marathon and complete a triathlon, so I bought books on how to train for the races and with some determination and hard work, I accomplished my goals!

From that moment on, I was hooked on exercising and eating right. I discovered that the more nutrient dense my food was the better my body performed and the better I felt and l looked.

Me After Kids:

After having my incredible babies, my time management and my body changed quite drastically (as most Moms can relate). I developed all kinds of health issues. My hormones were out of whack, I was lethargic, my environmental allergies were exploding, I was developing food allergies AND I developed cystic acne. What happened to me??? Am I the same person who just wrote the above paragraph?

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, both of my parents passed away. The stress and trauma of their sudden loss put my body in a downward spiral. I didn't give my body, spirit, or my heart the time to heal from such a tragic loss. Why am I sharing such a personal story?

I hope that my story will help others. I want people to understand that stress is really, really hard on the body and the body reacts to it. We live in a society that stress is so common that it's considered "normal". We know genetics play a major role in our health. However, genetics are the loaded gun and environmental factors are the trigger. Meaning, stress, diet and lifestyle.

During that time, I didn't sleep well plus I had a 3 year old and a newborn. My body was exhausted and I didn't want to emotionally deal with my grief. So, I tried to pretend nothing happened (denial). I continued with life, quieted my inner agony while my body was having a breakdown. When my newborn turned about 18 months, in addition to my health issues, my son started having tummy issues.

He often complained that his tummy hurt, he was itchy, and was always tired but not able to sleep well. I was determined to help me and my son so I visited many, many different doctors - general practitioners, allergists, GIs, dermatologists, you name it, and none of them were able to help. That's when I decided to take matters into my own hands and to take charge of our health.

Major changes started to take place, I was going to fight and get our lives back! Because I believe in the nourishing power of food and supplements, and the resiliency of the human body I knew I could figure out and fix whatever was going on with me and my son.

My passion had become my obsessive mission. I believe in the human body and what it's capable of far more than the prescriptions that were prescribed. So, I decided to become my own health detective and health advocate. So, I researched and researched and researched! I read about health and nutrition ALL of the time.

Luckily my son's health issues were relatively easy to address but me, well, that has taken countless hours and many years of research. I have been to numerous doctors that gave me little direction and a "bandaid" approach to address my health issues - "Take this prescription drug and see if it helps." I wasn't willing to take prescription after prescription - I wanted to find the source of the problem and resolve it. I tried several different types of "diets." Gluten free, dairy free, GAPS, juicing, and Paleo to name a few.

I was able to feel which worked best for my body and my system. I educated myself on numerous supplements and how they benefit our systems and organs. I stay up to date on various testing and as the health industry is exploding in discovery and protocol, I have found my way.

Having all of the information in front of me, I was able to get to the source of my issues. I knew it was working because I looked and felt like a new me. I was sleeping the best I had ever slept as an adult! I felt and still feel incredible...as long as I stick to my program 90% of the time. Meaning, my body can handle a few "cheats" here and there. AND, I learned to manage my stress and work through my grief.

Today:

It was a long and arduous 5 years and I'm still a work in progress, however the knowledge I have gained is a lifelong gift. After friends and family's encouragement and belief in my knowledge, I decided to start my own business and spread my health/wellness knowledge. In 2014, I completed my nutrition certification through The International Sports Science Association as well as completing the nutrition course through the Institute for Functional Medicine.

I'm also very proud to add that I completed the coaching program through the Institute of Functional Medicine Coaching Academy. The program is based on the same model as the Institute of Functional Medicine. The primary principles are based on personalized plans, nutrition, lifestyle and environment focus with a genetic component.

Through my ongoing education, ongoing research and my personal experience, I have gained an incredible amount of knowledge on how our body is connected and how food affects all aspects of the body. How food affects our energy level, mood, sleep patterns, hormones, brain function, and gut, just to name a few.
