“There is no such thing as a crazy patient. Physicians just didn’t listen to them enough to figure out the root cause of their concerns.” – Cheng Ruan, MD Chief Medical Officer of Texas Center for Lifestyle Medicine
When we see our patients, we dedicate a good portion of the time planning sustainable ways to attempt to reverse chronic disease with food and natural supplements to relieve pharmaceutical burden. Targeting an approach to minimize or eliminate medications is not always easy. It requires a robust and honest conversation between our team and our patients. We have many patients come from across the country to establish care so that we can design a dedicated program to ensure their maximal potential to be as healthy as possible.
Here are some features of our unique approach toward a host of chronic disease such as hypertension, diabetes, fibromyalgia, thyroid diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, obesity, chronic pain, osteoarthritis, dementia, and more.
We utilize Micronutrient testing (from SpectraCell Laboratories) to look at how or if your body is utilizing specific micronutrients. Rather than looking at blood levels of certain vitamins and minerals, we look at how your body uses them. For instance someone can have a serum vitamin D level that is in optimal range, but if the body’s white blood cells have lower utilization, we look at underlying reasons why. Tests like these have a huge implication in chronic disease. We find that targeting nutritional deficiencies is the key to attempt to reverse chronic illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes, dementia/mild cognitive impairment, ADHD, fibromyalgia, POTS syndrome, etc.
We look at comprehensive antibody testing toward a variety of foods (from Vibrant America Laboratories) that test for underlying inflammatory conditions such as gluten intolerance, intestinal permeability (leaky gut), celiac disease, specific food intolerances, etc.
We take in depth look at stool samples (microbiome analysis or the “poop” test) as a key component to underlying autoimmune issues, fat loss, diabetes, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, and more. Stool populations of certain bacteria, fungi, and even parasites can have a significant impact with many chronic diseases.
We offer high quality medical foods and supplements customized to our patients using the above tools. While many people have the same diagnoses, they do not arrive at that condition the same way.
While we can’t control genetics, we are able to manipulate whether or not we can express a certain gene for many conditions. For example, just because one has a family history of early dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease does not mean they are doomed. This is a concept of genetic expression modification through epigenetics. While we do look at genome and gene testing, we can give you a dedicated plan to alter your gene expression using the latest scientific data.
Environmental toxins such as mercury, air pollution, pesticides can wreak havoc on our ability to fight chronic illnesses. In fact many of these toxins deposit in our bodies and fat cells to cause chronic illnesses commonly mistaken and misdiagnosed as something else. For example, fluorides can have a huge impact on the thyroid while mercury can worsen diabetes, perpetuate obesity, and trigger other autoimmune diseases. We utilize tools to detect heavy metal toxicity to help determine a treatment plan.
Our focus is on maximizing health and minimizing medications. While we do prescribe medications, we concurrently search for the root cause to help you minimize or get off the medicine under our supervision.
