IV Therapy

What Is Infusion Therapy?

Intravenous (IV) infusion therapy is a safe and powerful treatment modality that provides intravenous (into the vein) administration of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants into the bloodstream.

Under healthy conditions, nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream and reach cells following the digestive process in the GI system. If your digestive or immune system is not functioning properly, as can occur with many medical conditions, it can become more difficult for the cells throughout the body to obtain the nutrients they need to maintain optimal health.

Learn More About IV Therapy

Intravenous injection allows your body to quickly achieve blood concentrations of nutrients that are unobtainable through oral or even intramuscular injections. Many people with chronic conditions have impaired gut function (leaky gut) and possible digestion issues that prevent them from absorbing adequate amounts of these nutrients. Given intravenously, the body is able to quickly utilize the nutrients for immediate improvement in the function of the cells.

IV nutrition therapy has been safely used for decades to treat patients with chronic health conditions including chronic fatigue, depression, cardiovascular problems, migraines, and fibromyalgia. Healthy individuals also utilize IV therapy to help enhance their overall health, boost energy levels, improve mood, and prevent illness.

Numerous IV infusions are available and the combination of nutrient infusions can be tailored to address your specific health care needs. Dr. Ruan and his team can create a targeted IV nutrition protocol that will provide the precise nutrients required to help your body naturally heal from within using specialized micronutrient testing. Rather than getting a superficial glimpse at the vitamins and minerals that are in the bloodstream, this test takes a deeper look inside the cells to get a more accurate picture of how your body is using the nutrients. By identifying and treating the true deficiencies, we can optimize your health more effectively and efficiently.

At TCLM we have 3 main infusion protocols to offer patients which can support a multitude of issues. These infusions can be personalized on a case by case basis depending on specific needs.

  • Energy and Detox Support- includes Vitamin C, Magnesium, B complex, B5, B6, B12, and Glutathione
  • Immune Support- includes Vitamin C, Magnesium, L-lysine, Taurine, B complex, B5, B6, B12, and Glutathione
  • Advanced Immune Support- includes high dose vitamin C and magnesium.

*all infusions are used with quality ingredients at pharmaceutical grade doses and require an order from a Physician or Nurse Practitioner

When you receive IV therapy, an IV line with a very small needle is placed into either your hand or arm. The treatment may last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the protocol that is recommended. The IV drip is virtually painless, and once it is in, you can sit back and relax until the infusion is completed. Most people leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated and enjoy the benefits for some time after treatment. Depending upon your unique health needs, Dr. Ruan will recommend future IV therapy sessions. Some vitamin infusions require multiple treatments to feel the full benefits, this can be directly related to how depleted you are.

Vitamin Infusion therapy at Texas Center for Lifestyle medicine utilizes high quality vitamins in pharmaceutical doses to help accelerate the healing process by giving your system a boost.

The main difference you will get with TCLM infusions is in dosing/quality of vitamins and access to medical providers to oversee the bigger picture treatment plan.

The ingredients are sourced from a few different compounding pharmacies that make preservative free vitamins in sterile facilities.

There are 3 main infusions given at TCLM. Infusions are decided with your provider depending on your individual needs.

Energy/Detox Infusion:

  • Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)
  • Magnesium Sulfate
  • B Complex
  • Dexpanthenol (B5)
  • Pyroxidine (B6)
  • Hydroxocobalamin (gentle B12)
  • Methylcobalamin (active B12)
  • Glutathione (separate IV push)

Immune Support Infusion:

  • Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)
  • Magnesium Sulfate
  • L-Lysine
  • Taurine
  • B Complex
  • Dexpanthenol (B5)
  • Pyroxidine (B6)
  • Hydroxocobalamin (gentle B12)
  • Methylcobalamin (active B12)
  • Glutathione (separate IV push)

Advanced Immune Support Infusion(Cancer only):

  • Ascorbic Acid (requires special lab draw prior to starting called G6PD)
  • Magnesium sulfate

All infusion dosing and ingredients are subject to change on a case by case basis, all changes are decided by the medical provider.

  • IV delivery bypasses the gut and allows the body to get 100% of the vitamin that is given.
  • IV micronutrients can jumpstart cellular processes needed by the body to heal itself and produce energy efficiently.
  • IV nutrients do not take the place of oral supplementation and a good diet.  Optimal nutrient levels cannot be sustained with IV supplementation alone.

All of the vitamins given in the infusion are water soluble, which means they will be eliminated from the body within a few hours after the infusion. For this reason, IV nutrients do not take the place of oral supplements. However, the effects of the vitamins can continue for several days after getting the vitamins. These effects typically last longer the more infusions you receive. In studies, 4 infusions was the average time it took for recipients to feel sustained effects.

Most people feel more tired the day of the infusion, this is usually due to the magnesium which causes muscles to relax. It can also be due to biochemical processes that may be increased due to the influx of the IV vitamins. There is no precise way of knowing how you will feel after these infusions as everyone’s biochemical makeup is different. For most people, increased energy may be felt 1-2 days after the infusion.

Sleep is usually improved the night after the infusion, especially with the sleep support infusion that is specifically geared toward supporting sleep.

There is no exact formula for how many infusions you will need, this depends on your body’s response. Vitamin infusions are meant to be supportive to help the body heal what needs to be healed. How fast this happens also depends on other lifestyle changes and issues that need to be addressed with your provider to optimize your treatment plan.

The recommended frequency to start with for chronic conditions are 1-2 infusions a week for 4 weeks, then follow up with your provider to discuss response to the infusions and plan moving forward to continue or not.

These infusions can be continued as long as there is a justifiable benefit to continue them.

For acute issues such as viral infections, it is recommended to receive 3-4 infusions close together if not consecutively or until symptoms have improved.

In general, the risk of receiving water soluble vitamins intravenously is low. However, getting these vitamins in pharmaceutical doses are meant to accelerate certain biochemical processes in the body and stimulate the immune system which can cause some side effects.

Side effects include:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Chills/feeling cold
  • Joint pains
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Brain fog that may last a few days to a week. This usually improves with repeated infusions as the body continues to heal.

Side effects can be managed by changing infusion ingredients or administration of the vitamins.

  • Nausea: the infusion can be slowed down which the majority of time resolves itself. Nausea is common with the higher doses of vitamin C, if it persists your provider can prescribe zofran disintegrating tablets to be given prior to infusions until this side effect subsides.
  • Persistent headaches: There are 2 things that can be adjusted.
      •  Eliminate methylcobalamin as methylated vitamins can cause headaches if there are other issues going on with the way the vitamins are being processed in the body.
      •  Eliminate glutathione as this can cause a sudden release of mucus in the sinuses which can contribute to headaches. If this is the case, discuss this with your provider and identify any need to further address sinus issues.
  • Anxiety/Insomnia: This can happen to some people that are intolerant to methylated vitamins. Methylcobalamin is eliminated if this occurs with the first infusion. You must let your infusion team know if this happens.
