The Dental, Upper Airway, Sleep Health Connection

We all know that the quality of our sleep is important for overall health, but few people are aware of just how much it can affect us. Sleep deprivation has been linked to a range of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, brain and mental health decline, neurological issues, hormone imbalances, diabetes, and more. But what many don't realize is that these ailments may be rooted in underlying issues such as airway obstruction or poor dental structure.

At Texas Center for Lifestyle Medicine (TCLM), we understand the complex relationship between your physical health and its connection to your lifestyle choices, genetics, and environmental exposures — and we’re here to help you uncover the root cause of your chronic conditions. Through collaboration with experts in orthodontics, sleep specialists, airways specialists, and myofascial experts, we can develop customized treatment plans tailored specifically to your needs — so you can start living a healthier life!

We have seen so many spectacular cases of patients who have recovered from complex conditions that had previously robbed them of living their best quality of life. With the help of specialists within our ecosystem, we have banded together to create a process that has proven to drastically improve patient outcomes. I'm sure you are wondering what this plan consists of... Typically, your journey in TCLM will include an assessment of the basic pillars of health, one of which includes sleep hygiene and another, mental health. Based on questionnaires, assessments, and tests such as brain mapping, we can determine your risk of upper airway issues, sleep disorders, and more.

From there, you may be referred to visit with sleep experts if you have symptoms of sleep apnea or other sleep disorders, biological dentists (based on your health history), orthodontic specialists if you may have obstructive airways due to structural issues, and even myofascial physicians, which is a crucial part of the journey following treatments to address structural issues.

This may seem overwhelming- we totally understand the bumpy road that is often the path toward health! Rest assured, our team is here to guide you along the way and help you implement lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet, establishing practices to decrease stress, and creating balance to your life, we will help you support your body and mind through the healing process at each step of the way!

For most of our members, this looks like signing up for group visit coaching programs to receive education and in-depth support. You may also visit one on one with our registered dietitian for individualized care, and our mind-body medicine practitioner to learn better ways of coping, how to handle the stressors involved in one's healing path, and embrace tools that will benefit you for a lifetime!

Because of the complexities involved in the development of chronic illness, we believe it is so important to maintain an ongoing process that allows collaboration of care among health experts who share the same mission. Therefore, we are able to cover all of the bases and aspects of patient care when it comes to chronic diseases.
