Neurobiological Understandings of Trauma, the Brain, and Evidence-Based Healing

Trauma is a complex experience that can have profound effects on an individual's well-being. While its manifestations vary from person to person, the neurobiological impact of trauma is significant and worth exploring.

The brain's response to trauma involves several key areas, including the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, thalamus, and hippocampus. To better understand this process, we can look at Paul MacLean's "triune brain" model, which divides the brain into three interconnected systems:

  1. The reptilian brain: Responsible for autonomic functions like breathing and heart rate.
  2. The mammalian brain (limbic system): Involved in memory and emotional responses, including the fight-flight-freeze reaction.
  3. The cerebral cortex: Handles higher-level thinking, planning, and language processing.

A Mindful Healing Path: Transforming Childhood Trauma

mind body medicine May 06, 2024

Childhood trauma can have a profound impact on mental health and increase the risk of various problematic behaviors like substance abuse, disordered eating, self-harm, and aggression. At our clinic, we understand the deep wounds that trauma can leave and offer mind-body medicine sessions to provide transformational tools that guide our members along their healing path. It is important to note that TCLM is not a crisis center for mental health concerns, nor do we replace emergency systems when it comes to intervening on patients' behalf for their mental health concerns. This blog is for educational purposes only and to shed light on mind-body medicine tools that have shown to be helpful in self-regulation, emotional expression, and self- awareness.

Here is what the research shows: Recent research published in the Journal of American College Health explored the roles that experiential avoidance and lack of mindfulness play in driving problematic behaviors in those who...

Reasons why you Can't stop Overeating (that have nothing to do with willpower)

When we struggle with overeating, it's easy to beat ourselves up over a perceived lack of willpower or self-control. However, there are often deeper root causes behind the drive to consume excess calories. By understanding some of these underlying factors, we can implement tailored solutions to tackle over eating.

Lack of Quality Sleep: If you're not getting enough sleep or struggling with a sleep disorder like sleep apnea or untreated narcolepsy, your body produces excess levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin. Sleep deprivation also throws off blood sugar regulation, leading to increased hunger the next day. If you suspect any sleep issues, discuss your symptoms with your provider to see if a sleep study may be beneficial. If you struggle with getting enough hours of sleep, try creating a structured sleep routine to implement every night. We recommend avoiding screen time at least 2-3 hours before your bedtime. Try reading, going for an evening walk, listening to binaural...

Unraveling the Connection: Trauma, Dysautonomia, and POTS

The human body is an intricate web of interconnected systems that work in harmony to maintain balance and regulate essential bodily functions. Among these systems, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a vital role in controlling involuntary bodily processes. However, in some cases, individuals may develop dysautonomia, a condition characterized by malfunctioning of the ANS. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia that specifically affects heart rate and blood pressure regulation. While the exact causes of dysautonomia and POTS are multifactorial, recent research has shed light on the potential role of physical and emotional trauma in the development of autonomic dysfunction. In this blog post, we will explore this intriguing connection, drawing upon medical journal citations, to better understand how trauma may contribute to the onset of dysautonomia and POTS in certain cases.
