Ask the Expert series with Susi Quintana: Airway-Sleep-ANS Connection

In our latest Ask the Expert session, we had the pleasure of welcoming Susi Quintana, whose wealth of knowledge provided us with invaluable insights into the complex interplay between airway and dental/jaw structural issues, the role of our body's connective tissue, and immune function.

Connective Tissue: The Unsung Hero We delved into the intricate relationship between our body's connective tissue, particularly the fascia, and its impact on our overall health. Contrary to popular belief, our fascia plays a critical role, serving as a communication network that influences our immune response.

Dr. Ruan and Susi shed light on the Importance of Air and Hydration Delving deeper, we explored the intricate connections between air quality, breathing techniques, sleep apnea, and iron levels with our connective tissue and immune response. Proper hydration was also highlighted as a crucial factor, not just in terms of water intake but also in maintaining the fluidity of our connective tissue.

Susi and Dr. Ruan discussed the connection between sleep apnea and POTS/dysautonomia and how addressing sleep apnea and improving airway function can help alleviate symptoms. The importance of proper breathing and posture for overall health was discussed and how focusing on proper breathing techniques, such as nasal breathing and diaphragmatic breathing, to improve oxygen exchange and support detoxification. Often a team of Airway-Centric specialists will collaborate to work on airway issues, jaw/mouth structural issues, posture, sleep disorders, and immune function. During the group, Dr. Ruan and Susi discussed the importance of maintaining good posture to support proper alignment of the spine and airway. Often this involves working with an airway-focused chiropractor! 

Promoting Holistic well-being In terms of treatment, Susi Quintana emphasized the importance of an outside-in approach, focusing on our current perceived reality or existence as a primary factor in promoting overall well-being. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, breathwork, and emotional resilience tools were discussed as potential avenues for reducing inflammation and promoting overall health.

Embracing a Holistic Approach
As we continue on our journey towards better health, Susi Quintana's insights serve as a reminder of the interconnectedness of our bodies and the need for a holistic approach. By working with an airway team who are all on the same page when it comes to sleep, structural issues, and airway hygiene, those suffering with chronic illnesses may discover a roadmap to healing.
